Established in 1987, Goldbridge’s mission is to minimise the level of social and family dysfunction, disease, injury and premature death, primarily associated with the misuse and dependency of alcohol and other drugs.
The facility offers a results-driven program focused on radical personal change, enhanced psychological well-being and social functioning. The Therapeutic Community program successfully reduces the risk of relapse and assists to overcome the challenges of settling back into mainstream society.
The organisation has built a reputation amongst past and current residents as the key program on the Gold Coast that achieves real and sustainable recovery outcomes.
What is a Therapeutic Community?
Evidence has demonstrated that a supportive community that values healthy living underpins a successful rehabilitation and reduces risk of relapse.
A Therapeutic Community (TC) is a treatment program in which the community itself, through self-help and mutual support, is the principal means for promoting personal change and a healthy outlook to life.
In a Therapeutic Community, residents and staff participate in the management and operation of the community through work crews, group therapy and psycho education groups; thus contributing to a psychologically and physically safe learning environment where change can occur.
There is a focus on the bio-psychosocial, emotional and spiritual dimensions of substance use, drawing on the community to heal individuals and support the development of the various behaviours, attitudes and values of healthy living.
Residents of Goldbridge (Southport, QLD) participate in ‘work crews’, which facilitate the day-to-day activities and management of the rehabilitation community.
They are entirely responsible for the cooking, cleaning and general maintenance of the facility.
This is seen as an integral part of the Goldbridge Program, and is essential in rediscovering life-skills for successful recovery, as well as fostering a sense of belonging.
Residents attend group counselling and therapy sessions for the duration of the residential program to address the underlying issues that have resulted in the chronic and habitual misuse of alcohol or other drugs.
A range of health and psycho-education groups are also provided which aim to provide all residents with knowledge about the nature of addiction and co-occurring mental conditions.
The purpose of these groups is to access vital information to aid recovery and learn strategies to deal with the effects of both addiction and associated mental illness.
Goldbridge employs a multi-disciplinary team of experienced professionals, including people in the fields of psychology, social work, medicine and education, as well as Goldbridge graduates who have gone through certification in AOD and mental health work.
There is an optional and highly recommended ‘Transition-to-Community’ program available to residents after completion of the residential treatment phase of the program, to assist with settling back in to every-day life.
